For creators who need contracts that work.
Arts & Rights is led by Phillip A. Charles, an attorney with several years of experience navigating the legal landscape of television and media. Most recently serving as Senior Counsel at Warner Bros. Discovery, he oversaw legal affairs for unscripted programming, documentaries, animation projects, and podcasts across HBO, TBS, TruTV, Discovery, HGTV, FOOD, and TLC networks. Prior to Warner Bros., Phillip served as Counsel at National Geographic Partners, where he drafted and negotiated production, licensing, and talent agreements for high-profile series including On the Edge with Alex Honnold, Narco Wars, and When Sharks Attack. As a production attorney, he has supported independent production companies like Critical Content, Kinetic Content, and Titmouse, working on projects like Catfish, Love is Blind, Married at First Sight, Spy Games, Haunted Hotel, and Strip Law. His work at SAG-AFTRA's Television and New Media Contracts department provided him with deep expertise in union agreements, talent contract interpretation, and dispute resolution for performers across broadcast and streaming platforms.
Before entering the entertainment industry, Phillip built a strong legal foundation, serving as Law Clerk to the Prince George's County Circuit Court in Maryland, where he drafted bench memoranda, opinions, orders, and jury instructions across criminal, family, property, and constitutional matters.
Phillip holds a J.D. from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, a B.A. in Business Administration from Clark Atlanta University, and a Certificate in Entertainment Studies from UCLA Extension. He is admitted to the Maryland, California, and Georgia State Bars.
As a screenwriter, Phillip won Best Tennessee Writer at the 2024 Nashville Film Festival for one of his projects. He understands the creative process from the inside—not just as an attorney protecting deals, but as a storyteller who knows what's at stake when independent creators are trying to get their work made.
